Abstract

Our paper focuses on experienced teachers in graduate schools of management in Thailand. In our empirical research, we conducted in-depth interviews using a semi-structured interview checklist. We asked our respondents to describe their processes for engaging with their new cultural environment (both in their classes and in the wider outside world). We describe how these teachers informed and educated themselves in the mores of a new culture. We will also describe how these teachers used their new knowledge to improve their professional competences and their students' learning experiences. In essence, and over a period of time, the teachers re-visited their own cultural and professional backgrounds and mindfully used this awareness to 'make sense of'' aspects of a new culture. In so doing, they were able better to manage the expectations of their students in their classes. They were able to refine their classroom pedagogy and to deliver course content that addressed the preferred learning styles of their students. We describe key attributes of the culture that the teachers sought to understand. We discuss our research findings and indicate directions for our future research agendas.
