The Application of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy to Alleviate Household Poverty of Banmai Santi Villagers in Nakhon Ratchasima Province

Abstract

One of the major challenges which Thailand currently faces are poverty reduction and the gap between rich and poor. The North and North Eastern of Thailand still has more than 10% of poverty rate compare to 8% of the country. Baan Mai Santi Village used to be the poorest village of Sung Noen District, Nakon Ratchasima province which located in the North Eastern Part of Thailand. The purposes of this research are to investigate current economic and social situation of Banmai Santi Villagers using The Economics and Social Survey Questionnaire from Thailand Sustainable Development Foundation and to study the application and results of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy to alleviate poverty in the model household. The interviews and focus groups were conducted in order to gain in depth information about sufficiency economy practices and activities. The 88 face to face questionnaires have been conducted in the village in order to understand the economic and social situation. The results of the study show that in application of the SEP in household will enhance better standard of living, both economic and social condition, resulting in alleviating from poverty.
