Abstract

The aim of this research is to propose a holistic approach to processes and data in healthcare service operations, leading to an integrated model as the basis for improving hospital supply chain efficiency and effectiveness. The approach is based on unitary structuring technique and is illustrated with a practical test case. The developed model identifies processes and data/information components; and component relationships. It is shown that various components can be integrated into a single model, for subsequent planning and execution of all involved in healthcare service operations, including simultaneous planning of materials, activities/operations, resources, and suppliers. It is evident from the proposed integrated model that various components and relationships can be brought together for effective and efficient planning of components involved. It is expected that, within broader research project undertaken, numerical simulation be carried out in the next stage, for evaluating the applicability of the proposed approach by using a surgical unit as a case study. Finally, the paper addresses practical implications and future research directions, in particular verification of the integrated approach with a real data set in a hospital setting.
