Abstract

Exploring the relevance of leadership theories and practices to Asian firms is topical, particularly as this fast-growing region becomes more sensitised to the need to be sustainable at both corporate and national levels. Sustainable Leadership (SL), a form of leadership applicable at both levels, has been shown in Western research to facilitate high performance through more sustainable practices. This paper presents empirical evidence for which SL practices drive sustainable corporate performance in Thailand’s emerging economy using 1,152 employees across various industries. Factor Analysis reveals eight key practices that predict enhanced corporate sustainability, four of which are significant to performance and sustainability in Thai firms: high product/service quality, valuing employees, employees’ empowerment and innovation. Implications, limitations and future research are discussed.
