Sooksan Kantabutra completed his Ph.D. at Macquarie Graduate School of Management in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, trained by Professor Gayle C. Avery, a world renowned leadership scholar.  Prior to joining CMMU in 2002, Dr. Kantabutra worked with a global consulting firm where he advised multinational corporations on leadership and change for several years, after graduating with an MBA from McCallum Graduate School of Business in Greater Boston, Massachusetts, the USA.  Having been educated in three continents and worked in a multinational corporate setting, Dr. Kantabutra brings a global perspective and experience into his research, teaching and consulting at CMMU.  Internationally, Dr. Kantabutra has been an International Research Fellow of Institute for Sustainable Leadership in Australia and Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change, Hong Kong Institute of Education in China.

 

As a recipient of Mahidol University's Most Internationally Cited Researcher Award, Dr. Kantabutra's significant contribution to the field of strategy and leadership is a theory of organizational vision that bridges the gap among the prevailing vision-based leadership theories.  His research has been adopted by practitioners and extended by researchers throughout the world.  Along with those of the world's most prominent international scholars of leadership, Dr. Kantabutra's research report, entitled What Do We Know About Vision?, has been reprinted in a textbook, Leading Organizations: Perspectives for A New Era, launched worldwide in 2010 by Sage Publications.  More recently, he is named by Emerald Publishing Group in the UK Highly Commended Paper Award Winners for his vision and sustainable leadership research reports at Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2011 and 2012, and by the World Human Resource Development Congress 2012 the Outstanding Leadership Award Winner for his leadership and contribution to the field.

Sooksan Kantabutra has reviewed manuscripts for publication in high-quality international journals, including Group and Organization Management, Leadership, International Journal of Organizational Analysis, and Leadership and Organization Development Journal.  He serves as a founding Editorial Board member for Thailand HR Journal and an Editorial Advisory Board member for Emerald's Journal of Global ResponsibilityHe has also reviewed grants for the National Research Council of Thailand and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the UK's leading agency for research funding and training in economic and social sciences.

As a researcher, Dr. Kantabutra has worked with such national and international organizations as The Thai Chamber of Commerce, Office of The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), The Crown Property Bureau, The Commision on Higher Education, Office of The Royal Development Projects Board, Asian Productivity Organization and The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).  At present, Dr. Kantabutra is a Project Director of Thailand Research Fund to develop Sufficiency Economy Business Standard (SEBS) for use by Office of The Royal Development Projects Board.  He has so far attracted approximately 15 million baht of grants from within Thailand and overseas, including the prestigious Royal Golden Jubilee-Ph.D. grants.

In terms of teaching, Dr. Kantabutra has taught at Thailand's principal institutions such as the National Defence College of Thailand, the Capital Market Academy and the Thai Institute of Directors.  He believes research excellence and top class education go hand in hand.  The first of its kind in the nation, Dr. Kantabutra, along with his colleagues, has published a research-based textbook, entitled Sufficiency Economy Leadership Practices, with Thailand Research Fund, intended for use by business school instructors around the country who wish to teach the application of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej's philosophy of Sufficiency Economy in business. His pioneering research on the royal philosophy of Sufficiency Economy in business organizations has informed policies and practices of numerous businesses in Thailand today.

At present, Dr. Kantabutra is a member of Board of Directors for Center for the Study of Sufficiency Economy, National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), and sits on several national committees, including the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand's, to promote His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej's philosophy of Sufficiency Economy in the Thai business sector.
