Research Publications In Service Operations: An Extended Review In Asian Context

Abstract

Service Operations Management (SOM) is the academics niche under Operations Management field. SOM was evolved due to economic development, advancement of technology and innovation. In this paper, the literature review of service operations management was carried out. The purpose of this study is to trace the historical academics research of SOM which were published in five top academic journals, which are Journal of Operations Management, Management Sciences, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Operations Research and Production and Operations Management over the period of 19-years, from 1990-2008 in order to identify the studies related to Asian countries context. This paper is an extension of th ework done by Smith et a. with an additional focus on SOM in Asian countries context together with an up-to-date review of the articles published in those top five journals during 2007-2008. Articles were analyzed and sorted by categories according to their topics, methodology, and servie sectors. Results showed that there are a small number of articles under the SOM scope within Asian countries specific. While we can positively take this fact as the big opportunity and take it further under high technology and innovation environment, we cannot disregard issues, obstacles and reasons wihch dragged behind SOM works.
