Roadmapping The Future Development Of Converging Technologies To Combating Emerging Infectious Diseases

Abstract

During the past 10 years, the spread of emerging infectious diseases such as SARS, Avian Influenza, etc. have caused serious impacts to the community particularly in Asia Pacific Economic Corporation (APEC) member economies.This paper presents the foresight research done as the collective efforts by a group of international experts to develop roadmaps guiding the direction for the future research and development of converging technologies used for managing, preventing, and combating emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases. In this paper, the combination of roadmapping approach, bibliometric analysis, and scenario planning is elaborated as a part of the research methodologies. A roadmap of the future drug and vaccine development for infectious diseases is presented as an example of the research outputs.
