Dr. Saratun's Latest International Journal Publication in Human Resource Management Journal

on .

Dr. Molraudee Saratun, with her colleagues Prof. Paul Marginson and Dr. Jim Arrowsmith from University of Warwick, UK, has recently published their research in Human Resource Management Journal.  The article is entitled "Undermining or reframing collective bargaining? Variable pay in two sectors compared ". The article appears in the journal's volume 18, issue 4.

The research was sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), UK. It examined the relationship between variable payments systems (VPS) and collective bargaining. Although it is widely presumed that VPS such as individual merit and profit-related pay are corrosive of collective bargaining, the actual relationship between the two remains little explored. Drawing on British company case studies from retail banking and machinery and equipment, the research finds that collective bargaining can variously be reconfigured – as over individual merit pay in the banks; extended to cover local bonus arrangements, evident in instances in both sectors; or lose its purchase on a significant proportion of earnings – as with management-determined profit-related bonus in both sectors. In terms of the implications for collective bargaining, much therefore depends on the type of VPS.

Human Resource Management Journal is a reputable journal in the field of Human Resources, and it is indexed in Scopus, the world's largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed journals. CMMU students will have a chance to learn first-hand from Dr. Saratun about how to design and implement variable pay programs.  Publication of this report comfirms CMMU's status as a leading business school in Asia.
